SRPG is a genre with many classics and nostalgic memories, but it’s not always an easy genre to appeal to a wider audience. Why did you decide to create Unicorn Overlord as an SRPG?

Director Noma’s passion for SRPGs played a significant role in the decision to develop Unicorn Overlord in this genre. The game’s concept stemmed from a desire to revive the classic SRPG style while incorporating modern elements to attract both longtime fans and new players.

The development process involved analyzing the evolution of gaming trends over the years and recognizing the niche that SRPGs occupy in the industry. This led to a collaborative effort between Atlus and Vanillaware to create a title that would resonate with SRPG enthusiasts.

As a collaboration between two development studios, how did you divide roles between the two?

Vanillaware focused on the game’s development, leveraging their expertise in crafting visually stunning and immersive gameplay experiences. Meanwhile, Atlus handled the publishing and distribution aspects to ensure the game reached a wide audience.

The demo version had a substantial amount of content compared to typical demos. Providing a demo like this may have its pros and cons. What did you consider when determining the content and distribution of the demo?

The decision to offer a content-rich demo was strategic, aiming to give players a comprehensive preview of the game’s mechanics and storytelling. Extensive playtesting was conducted to ensure that the demo provided a fulfilling experience without revealing too much of the main storyline.

Many users are also hoping for a PC version. Are there any plans to expand to other platforms?

While the initial development focused on console platforms, the evolving landscape of the gaming industry prompted the expansion to PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox. The current focus remains on these platforms, with no immediate plans for a PC release.

What are the charms of games from Vanillaware and Atlus, and how do you think they can appeal to players?

Both Atlus and Vanillaware share a commitment to creative innovation, as seen in Unicorn Overlord’s unique blend of online elements and classic SRPG gameplay. The game’s development stemmed from a desire to offer something fresh and exciting to players, drawing inspiration from past gaming experiences while pushing the boundaries of the genre.

By staying true to their creative vision and taking risks to deliver a standout title, the collaboration between Atlus and Vanillaware showcases their dedication to providing memorable gaming experiences.
