The London-based organization announced that they will no longer be competing in any gaming titles. Instead, they are rebranding themselves as a media platform, concentrating on news, entertainment shows, and interactive content. They assured their fans that they are not disappearing but are transitioning into a new role to engage with the community in a different way.
“We care deeply about our fans, which is why we are not simply walking away. Tundra Esports is evolving into a media hub to stay connected with all of you,” Tundra explained.
Dota 2 Fans Disappointed, But Esports Could Be a Sinking Ship
Unsurprisingly, fans were not pleased with the news, expressing their disappointment in various online forums. The prevailing sentiment seemed to be one of mourning.
The community’s frustration is understandable. Tundra was a successful organization, having won The International in 2022 and boasting a highly accomplished Dota 2 team that had recently clinched victories at ESL One Birmingham and DreamLeague Season 28.
The fact that even the top team in the world struggled financially raises concerns about the sustainability of competitive gaming.
This move towards content creation mirrors strategies adopted by other organizations in the past, with mixed results. During challenging times for esports, major teams like FaZe Clan and 100 Thieves turned to lifestyle and content creation to survive. However, fans typically support these organizations for their competitive success rather than their content offerings.
The esports industry faces significant financial challenges, with operating costs rising steeply. Player salaries often exceed revenue from sponsors and merchandise sales, especially in games like Dota 2 where tournament structures have changed, and prize pools have decreased.
