Meta has acquired 419 global VR patents from Sony, including 180 patents filed in the US, as part of an agreement signed in December 2025.

According to reports by ZDNet Korea (via Digital Foundry), the remaining patents have been filed in various regions such as Japan, China, Korea, and Europe.

Between June and September of this year, Sony transferred over 40 of these patents to Meta, covering virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, and head-mounted display systems.

In February 2023, Sony launched the PSVR 2 headset with a retail price of $549.99. The PSVR 2 is also available in a bundle with Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Call of the Mountain for $599.99.

Horizon Call of the Mountain and First Contact Entertainment’s Firewall Ultra were two major first-party titles released by Sony for the PSVR 2.

Within six weeks of its launch, the PSVR 2 sold 600,000 units, surpassing the original PSVR headset. In 2024, the PSVR 2 received PC support with an adapter.

Sony’s decision to scale back its VR efforts coincides with the company’s choice to skip the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) for the first time since its inception in 1967.

Sony cited a focus on “entertainment, intellectual property, and technology geared to support creators” as the reason for its absence from the event.

Meta recently announced a shift from VR headsets to VR Glasses, set to launch in Spring 2027 at a price of $1,299.99 and will have Unity support from day one.

Despite investing in new VR technology, Meta’s VR/AR Reality Labs division has reported significant losses over the past three years, amounting to $19.2 billion in FY25.

Earlier this year, the division underwent a 10% reduction and the closure of three VR studios, including Twisted Pixel Games, Sanzaru Games, and Armature Studio.

Reality Labs also experienced additional layoffs in March and discontinued its Metaverse platform Quest VR as it shifts focus to mobile.
