According to IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak, the recently-released 007 First Light game is approaching three million copies sold. While the game has not yet made back its budget, Abrak mentions that the actual budget is lower than the previously reported $200 million. Discussions are ongoing regarding the future collaboration between the studio and Bond license holder Amazon beyond the initial year of content for the game.
Following an event in LA where it was officially announced that the game had sold 2.7 million copies in less than two weeks, Abrak stated in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz that the game has likely exceeded three million units sold, surpassing their initial expectations. He clarified that the $200 million budget included marketing and future bonuses, making the actual investment less than that figure.
Abrak expresses that while they haven’t fully recovered their costs due to partnerships and royalties, the game’s sales have exceeded their dreams and expectations. He anticipates that it will set a significant record and achieve great success for the studio.
IO Interactive has announced a lineup of upcoming content for the game’s first year, with most of it being offered for free. Abrak hints at the possibility of extending support for the game beyond the initial year, emphasizing the potential for exciting developments in the second year.
Regarding future plans, Abrak mentions that they are currently in discussions with Amazon about the game’s future, focusing on the live updates for First Light. He teases that there will be further announcements about the future collaboration between Amazon and IO Interactive in due course.
