The competitive Pokémon community was taken by surprise when The Pokémon Company announced a major change to the Pokémon UNITE Championship Series. The beloved pocket-monster MOBA is no longer part of the 2027 Pokémon World Championships lineup. Instead, it will have its own dedicated tournament, the Pokémon UNITE Aeos Crown 2027 in Tokyo, Japan.

This news has left the community reeling, with long-time casters and players expressing their disappointment. Caster Evan Hashimoto, who has been part of the Worlds circuit for almost a decade, shared his sadness at the possibility of not returning to the main stage. “UNITE deserved better,” he lamented.

Despite the disappointment, fans are acknowledging the incredible energy that UNITE teams brought to the global event and are hopeful that their favorite players will still have a chance to shine in the new Tokyo league.

While the move may seem like a setback, separating from the mainline Pokémon games could actually benefit competitive UNITE. By having its own dedicated tournament, the game can take center stage. The upcoming Aeos Crown 2027 in Tokyo will feature up to 32 qualified teams from around the world, with winners of regional qualifiers receiving paid travel awards.

Starting November 2026, players will compete in online regional qualifiers following a newly unified global rule set.

Being excluded from the World Championships may sting, but earning a trip to Tokyo for a 32-team offline showdown is a significant consolation. The tournament organizers have promised a prize pool, and the focus on 5v5 battles and intense gameplay could give UNITE the spotlight it deserves.

While the era of the unified Pokémon Worlds may be ending, the competitive spirit of UNITE is far from fading. It’s simply embarking on a new journey to Japan for a solo adventure.
