The 2027 World Esports Championship will be hosted in Astana, Kazakhstan, as announced by the International Esports Federation. This decision marks Kazakhstan’s efforts to play a more significant role in the global esports economy by hosting the federation’s flagship national-team event in Central Asia.

The host agreement for WEC27 was signed in Astana by IESF, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports, and the Qazaq Cybersport Federation. Over 150 member federations are expected to participate in qualifiers for the event, which will include various official competitions for national teams.

Details such as financial terms, venues, game titles, prize money, ticketing plans, and the event schedule have not been disclosed yet. IESF mentioned that these specifics will be shared later through their official channels.

IESF President Vlad Marinescu expressed that WEC27 will not only be a championship but also a global celebration of nations, athletes, and the future of esports. He commended Kazakhstan for demonstrating remarkable vision, ambition, and commitment.

For Kazakhstan, this hosting deal aligns with their broader strategy to establish the country as a destination for esports, digital sport, and youth-focused technology events. Esports gained official recognition as a sport in Kazakhstan in 2018 when the Qazaq Cybersport Federation received accreditation from the country’s sports authorities.

Astana has been increasingly recognized as an esports host city, having recently hosted PGL Astana 2026 and scheduled Games of the Future 2026 with a substantial prize pool. These events position Astana as a favorable location for competitive gaming.

Hosting IESF events provides governments with opportunities for tourism promotion, soft-power positioning, youth engagement, and infrastructure development for event production. IESF promotes benefits such as cultural exchange, tourism activity, global visibility, and community engagement through their host-bidding materials.

The World Esports Championship stands out from commercial club-based circuits by emphasizing national representation through recognized member federations. Prior editions were held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Kazakhstan’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, Yerbol Myrzabosynov, expressed confidence in the country’s ability to deliver an event of the highest international standard. This aligns with Kazakhstan’s efforts to create opportunities for young people through sport, technology, education, and international cooperation.

Kuanyshbek Yessekeyev, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Qazaq Cybersport Federation, described the agreement as a historic milestone for Kazakhstan’s esports community.

The signing ceremony coincided with the launch of Kazakhstan’s University Campus initiative, further linking WEC27 to the country’s focus on education, innovation, and youth development. However, operational connections between the championship and the campus initiative were not specified in the announcement.

For IESF, the Astana deal secures another government-backed host for its national-team model amidst a crowded global esports calendar. This agreement also positions Astana as a regional hub for competitive gaming and digital entertainment, following the success of Games of the Future 2026.
