Today at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Anaheim, it was announced that ‘Final Fantasy XIV,’ the flagship MMORPG from Square Enix, will be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2.
The Fan Festival is known for revealing major updates and expansions for the game, and this year was no different. Attendees were treated to a teaser trailer for the upcoming 8.0 expansion, ‘Seeker of Silver,’ along with new features like the ‘Adventurer Activity’ system, enhanced gear mechanics, and character skill skins. The expansion is set to release in January 2027.
Apart from the expansion, there was also news about improvements to the global server matching system. A new ‘cross-server matching within region’ feature will allow players to connect across all servers in the same region, with testing slated for the upcoming 7.5x patch cycle. Producer Naoki Yoshida mentioned, “We will start testing in Japan and expand to other regions once stability is confirmed.”
One of the standout announcements was the reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 version. The game is expected to launch officially in August, with a free-to-play early access period preceding the release.
Unlike most console online games, players of the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV won’t need a separate paid membership like Nintendo Switch Online. However, a paid subscription will still be required for certain services.
Players who are already subscribed on other platforms can avail of a 50% discount on the Nintendo Switch 2 version. The game is set to launch in August 2026, with a series of updates leading up to the release.
