Soccer star Thibaut Courtois, the goalkeeper for Real Madrid, has made an investment in Fusion Esports Group, the Danish company that owns Astralis. This comes after Astralis’s audited accounts highlighted the need for new capital, which had not been secured at the time.

In an announcement on Tuesday, Astralis revealed that Courtois and Spanish entrepreneur Gonzalo Vila have become investors in Fusion through their investment group NXTPLAY. This move adds Astralis to their portfolio, which already includes clubs like Le Mans FC, CD Extremadura, and KRC Genk.

The financial details of the investment were not disclosed.

Fusion’s press release to The Esports Advocate positions this investment as part of a broader trend where athletes are increasingly moving towards ownership, investment, and business development, rather than just endorsement deals.

Courtois expressed his confidence in Astralis, stating, “Astralis is a team I’ve been familiar with for some time. I appreciate their direction and the ambition to grow within the esports industry.” He is listed as a co-founder and partner of NXTPLAY in the release. Fusion Esports Group CEO Jonas Gundersen described the investment as a significant milestone for the company.

This investment comes at a crucial time for Astralis, as their own filings indicate financial challenges. Fusion acquired Astralis in September 2025 after the organization reported significant losses in 2024. The new ownership has yet to stabilize the company’s finances.

The 2025 annual report of Astralis CS ApS shows a net loss for the year, negative equity, and a cash balance of DKK 97,633. The company’s auditors raised concerns about its ability to continue operations without additional capital.

Furthermore, the report revealed issues with the company’s bookkeeping and incorrect VAT returns, which have since been rectified. The management acknowledged the need for additional liquidity and mentioned ongoing negotiations to secure the required capital.

Despite challenges, Fusion Esports Group recently registered a significant cash capital increase, indicating a positive step in securing the necessary funds. The company’s ownership structure has also seen changes over time.

Courtois’s investment in Astralis through NXTPLAY is part of a series of minority investments for the group. Previously, Courtois invested in KRC Genk through NXTPLAY and has shown interest in esports by launching his own sim racing team in 2024.

Key details such as the size of NXTPLAY’s stake, the exact terms of the investment, and the impact of the recent capital increase remain undisclosed. The deal underscores the potential for Astralis to thrive with increased financial backing.
