On Wednesday, PlayVS, the scholastic esports platform, announced that it has undergone a restructuring, secured full financing, and has now reinstated competition fees for its school programs. This marks the end of the free-to-schools model that the company implemented back in November 2023.

In a message directed to the PlayVS community, signed by “The PlayVS Team,” the company disclosed that it faced significant operational and financial challenges earlier in the year. In response, PlayVS took measures to reduce costs, streamline operations, and seek new funding. As of last week, the company has completed its reorganization and secured full financing. However, specific details regarding the amount of funding, investors involved, or the deal structure were not provided.

The update emphasized the importance of providing reliable technology, league operations, and customer support, which led to the decision to reintroduce competition fees to the scholastic programs. PlayVS also expressed a renewed focus on delivering a high-quality competitive experience that adds the most value for its users.

Furthermore, the update introduced a new leadership team comprising Jonathan Boswell as CEO, Juanita Russell as CFO, and Charles O’Donnell as CRO. Boswell, who has been with PlayVS for nearly seven years, previously served as the CTO since January 2025. Russell joined as CFO in January 2026, bringing her experience from Common Securitization Solutions. O’Donnell joined in April 2025 through PlayVS’ acquisition of Playfly Sports’ esports division.

Notably absent from the update is any mention of Jon Chapman, the former CEO. Reports indicate that Chapman has left the company, as he no longer appears on the leadership page. PlayVS has not disclosed the details surrounding his departure.

The reversal of fees marks a significant shift from Chapman’s strategy during his tenure. In November 2023, PlayVS eliminated school fees, replacing them with a sponsorship-based model. However, the recent update indicates a return to the fee-based system to ensure the sustainability of the platform.

The updated fee structure differs from the previous model, with high schools now paying $595 and middle schools paying $495 for the full school year, covering unlimited titles, teams, and players across multiple seasons. The update also highlighted that the new fees offer cost savings for the majority of schools compared to the previous per-student pricing.

Despite the changes, PlayVS remains committed to investing in its platform, curriculum, partnerships, and competitions for middle school through college. The company aims to evolve beyond being just a competition platform by integrating competition with curriculum, college opportunities, and career readiness initiatives.

As PlayVS navigates through these changes, it continues to uphold its relationships with state associations and keep its acquired brands operational. The future of scholastic esports infrastructure and funding models remains a focal point as PlayVS adapts to new challenges.
