The reason behind this decision? A few players were attending the tournaments with such poor hygiene that it was driving away other customers from the shop.
The shop announced this move on its official Discord server, citing complaints about player odors and inappropriate restroom behavior as the primary reasons for the suspension.
Addressing Poor Hygiene in Tournaments
While most trading card game bans typically involve powerful cards, this suspension was unique as it was related to hygiene issues. According to the shop’s management, the situation had escalated to the point where visitors were leaving negative reviews simply due to the unpleasant smells in the store.
The store owners emphasized that they were enforcing the official guidelines set by Konami. In 2019, Konami updated its global tournament policy to include cleanliness requirements. The rulebook explicitly states that players must maintain proper hygiene, as excessively dirty or smelly individuals may face penalties or be asked to leave the venue.
The fact that basic self-care had to be explicitly mentioned in the official rules highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the tournament scene.

While the idea of using body odor as a tactic may seem amusing, veteran card players are familiar with the darker side of the “tournament funk” meme.
