Gen.G Esports fell short of qualifying for the MSI after a tough 2-3 defeat to T1 in the ‘2026 LoL Champions Korea (LCK)’ Road to MSI 2nd Seed Qualifier on the 14th at the Wonju DB Promy Arena in Wonju, Gangwon-do. Their hopes of achieving a 2026 MSI three-peat, following their victories in 2024 and 2025, were dashed before they could even begin. Head Coach Yoo Sang-wook expressed his disappointment at the post-match press conference, noting that while their overall performance wasn’t bad, they struggled to synchronize during critical moments and were ultimately outplayed by T1 in both draft strategy and team coordination.

The focus of many questions revolved around the draft phase, with Coach Yoo revealing that Gen.G’s draft strategy aimed at securing early-game dominance in the top lane. This strategy led to the selection of champions like Jayce, Nidalee in the jungle, and Gangplank in the top lane. Coach Yoo admitted that they had prepared Jayce in the jungle as a flex pick for the series, but they were caught off guard by T1 flexing Sion into the mid lane in Game 3.

The decision to pick Gangplank for ‘Kiin’ Kim Gi-in in Game 4 was a spontaneous choice based on his proficiency with the champion, even though it wasn’t a part of their initial plan. Similarly, the selection of Nidalee in the jungle for the final Game 5 was due to their trust in ‘Canyon’ Kim Geon-bu’s skills on the champion.

‘Ruler’ Park Jae-hyuk, who also attended the press conference, attributed the loss to poor decision-making in advantageous situations, highlighting missed opportunities to capitalize on leads. He specifically mentioned a questionable Baron call in Game 2 as a pivotal moment that could have turned the tide in their favor.

Despite the setback, ‘Ruler’ remained optimistic about the team’s progress throughout the season and pledged to use the upcoming break to prepare diligently for the EWC tournament.
