The highly anticipated reboot of Fable by Playground Studios was showcased in detail during the recent Xbox Developer Direct event in January. The team also revealed that the game is set to launch in Autumn 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S and X. However, the Autumn release window is quite broad, especially considering that it overlaps with the planned release date of Grand Theft Auto 6 on November 19. Given the massive impact that GTA 6 is expected to have on the gaming industry, Playground may decide to delay Fable once more to avoid direct competition.
There are rumors suggesting that Playground has internally postponed the launch of Fable. While the team is still aiming for a 2026 release, they are concerned about the potential clash with GTA 6. If the release date of Fable ends up aligning with GTA 6, the game could be pushed back to 2027 to prevent being overshadowed by Rockstar’s title. Here is what Jeff Grubb had to say on the matter:
“I’ve heard that Fable has been delayed internally. This doesn’t necessarily mean it will come out next year. They are still trying to meet the 2026 deadline, but they are wary of the GTA 6 launch. If the delay extends beyond GTA 6’s release, Fable might be pushed to December, making it a potential candidate for a 2027 launch. While Xbox has a strong lineup of games this year, Fable remains uncertain.”
Originally scheduled for a 2025 release, Fable was postponed to 2026 to allow for additional polishing. With the latest rumors circulating, there is a possibility that the game might not even meet this revised timeline. Despite potential delays, fans of Fable may be willing to wait longer for a more refined game that has a better chance of success and potential sequels.
