Undead Labs has broken their silence after years to announce that State of Decay 3 is still in development and will soon begin Alpha testing. The news was shared on the official website with a brief message to the community.
“You’ve all been super patient, and we hope you’re as excited as we are that the moment has arrived to start sharing State of Decay 3 with you. We want to be upfront that this first wave of playtests will be limited, but we plan on sharing insights and feedback with everyone as we go, and if you don’t get into this first group, rest assured there will be more opportunities throughout the year,” the message read.
Registrations for the Alpha testing are now open on this page. It hasn’t been clarified whether the Alpha testing will be available on PC, Xbox Series S|X, or both platforms yet. However, more information is expected to be provided as the testing phase approaches. In the meantime, a new “Pre-Alpha/In-engine” screenshot has been shared by Undead Labs.
A video announcement by Franchise Co-Creator and Principal Art Director Brant Fitzgerald revealed some details about the upcoming game.
“Over the last few years, most of the team has been doing updates for State of Decay 2. The rest of us have been creating cool [bleep] for State of Decay 3. We’ve been keeping a close eye on what you liked about State of Decay 2 and what you didn’t. We’ve read your feedback on Discord. We’ve watched your gameplay clips and live streams on YouTube. Starting next month, we’ll be hosting a series of Alpha playtests with the community. Listen, I’m not going to spoil the surprise for you, but I can say that it will feature 4-player co-op, some new base building and resource strategies, and a whole lot of combat,” Fitzgerald shared.
State of Decay 3 was initially announced in July 2020 while still in the concept phase. It was later highlighted by now-retired Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer as one of his most anticipated first-party titles. However, reports of development issues, including allegations of mismanagement and sexism, surfaced. The game resurfaced with a gameplay trailer during the Xbox Game Showcase 2024. Subsequently, Undead Labs announced that post-launch support for State of Decay 2 would end soon as the focus shifted entirely to State of Decay 3.
