Three major sportsbooks in the US, namely FanDuel, DraftKings, and Fanatics, are significantly increasing their political spending to advocate for favorable gambling regulations.
Together, these companies donated $42 million to the Super PAC Win for America in the last quarter, marking a substantial surge in their financial contributions.
According to a report by Gaming America, these funds have been channeled into various organizations, including DraftKings’ America Future PAC, which received $7.3 million in donations and was established just last year.
DraftKings, a key player in this initiative, initially invested $2 million in Win for America and has now added an additional $17.5 million this quarter. FanDuel matched this amount by contributing $19.5 million. The extent of coordination between these rival companies remains unclear.
All three companies, including Fanatics, are members of the Sports Betting Alliance (SBA), with Fanatics contributing $4 million towards the cause.
Anticipating Legalization in Texas and Georgia
Out of the $42 million total, $26.1 million was allocated to the American Conservative Fund. This funding was distributed among various political and media groups, with $6.4 million specifically designated for the American Conservative Fund of Georgia.
Despite previous setbacks, efforts to legalize sports betting in Georgia have continued. Last year, a committee recommended permitting online wagering, and the increased funding from these companies could sway more lawmakers to support relaxing Georgia’s stringent anti-gambling laws.
An additional $3.5 million from the companies went towards the Texas Conservative Fund. This investment reflects a concerted push by gambling entities to promote pro-gambling initiatives in the state, including lobbying for the construction of a commercial casino in North Texas by Las Vegas Sands.
If legalized, online betting in these states could pave the way for esports gambling, complementing the existing array of esports markets available through prediction markets.
Supporting Current Markets
Aside from expanding into new territories, the companies are also focusing on upholding favorable conditions in their existing markets.
The American Future PAC has predominantly supported politicians in Illinois who advocate for reducing taxes on gambling. This support comes amidst debates among lawmakers regarding taxes on bets and a new tax on gambling in Chicago.
Furthermore, the three sportsbooks collectively contributed $3 million to the Win for Pennsylvania PAC. Pennsylvania already permits legal online casinos and sports betting, but operators are subject to a substantial 36% tax on gaming revenue. The donations aim to prevent an increase in this tax rate, ensuring it does not reach the levels seen in states like New York, where operators face a 51% tax on revenue.
Assessing the Outcome
The effectiveness of this heightened spending remains to be seen. DraftKings and FanDuel previously invested heavily in advocating for legal sports betting in California, only to have their efforts rebuffed by voters.
While these companies have grappled with profitability since the legalization of sports betting nationwide, they continue to explore new markets and invest in advertising. DraftKings recently reported marginal positive numbers at the close of last year, and along with FanDuel and Fanatics, they are also exploring prediction markets as a means to expand their user base.
Established players in the industry, such as Kalshi and Polymarket, are also ramping up their lobbying efforts, alongside commercial and tribal casinos. The question remains: will channeling more funds into super PACs yield greater profits or prove to be a drain on resources? Only time will unveil the answer.
