Geekbench Cannot Replicate Intel’s Arrow Lake Refresh Gains From the Binary Optimization Tool, Urging Users to Treat Results With Caution

Intel’s Binary Optimization Tool (IBOT) is causing a stir, even though it’s not yet available to consumers. Geekbench has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the toolkit.

Geekbench Declares All Core Ultra 200S Plus Benchmarks Invalid For Now

IBOT aims to optimize compiler-level binaries and unify x86 performance across various platforms, be it console or PC. Our recent in-depth look at IBOT raised concerns about benchmark consistency between Intel’s internal and third-party testing. Geekbench has now posted a blog doubting IBOT’s ability to boost synthetic performance by up to 40%, leading to Arrow Lake Refresh benchmarks being labeled as “invalid”.

As a (hopefully temporary) workaround, the Geekbench Browser will display the following warning on all Geekbench 6 CPU benchmark results from CPUs that support the Binary Optimization Tool: “This benchmark result may be invalid due to binary modification tools that can run on this system.”

The post mentions that Primate Labs, the team behind Geekbench, is unsure how Intel achieved performance gains with IBOT, hence the Core Ultra 200S Plus benchmarks being deemed invalid. Geekbench cannot currently detect IBOT activation on processors, impacting benchmark results. Thus, all Arrow Lake Refresh benchmarks will carry a cautionary note for now.

Previously, Intel’s APO faced criticism due to discrepancies between internal and third-party benchmark results. While Intel boasted significant gains, they were mostly evident in CPU-bound scenarios, leading to skepticism and accusations of gimmickry. Though IBOT offers a more promising approach, Geekbench’s stance might cause confusion among potential Core Ultra 200S Plus buyers, albeit not a major concern.

It’ll be interesting to observe how consumers perceive Arrow Lake Refresh going forward, given initial reviews indicating decent performance. The true impact of IBOT on a wider scale remains to be seen.
