Fishlabs, a German developer, has announced that it will be reducing its workforce, affecting both its development and support teams.

While the exact number of employees impacted has not been disclosed, the studio explained that the decision was made due to “changing project requirements and the needs of our clients and internal teams.”

The studio expressed its gratitude towards the affected employees for their dedication and contribution, stressing that the decision was not a reflection of their talent or performance. Fishlabs is committed to supporting them as they transition to their next opportunities.

Despite the changes, Fishlabs remains dedicated to its partner projects and its teams going forward. However, the immediate focus is on supporting those who will be leaving the company.

Previously, Fishlabs underwent job cuts in 2023, reducing its workforce by 50 roles as part of Embracer Group’s restructuring program. The studio is a subsidiary of Plaion, which is under Embracer’s portfolio.

Founded in 2004 by Michael Schade and Christian Lohr, Fishlabs was later acquired by Plaion (formerly known as Koch Media) in 2013. This acquisition followed Fishlabs’ filing for bankruptcy, leading to the termination of 25 positions.

After leaving Fishlabs, Schade and Lohr went on to establish Rockfish Games, the developer behind Everspace, in 2014. Recently, Rockfish Games received €8 million from the German government’s expanded €125 million games fund to support the development of the next Everspace shooter franchise.
