The first week of the Esports World Cup 2026 saw a mix of viewership outcomes in its initial tournaments. Apex Legends stood out with a thrilling conclusion and a notable increase in viewership compared to the previous year, while Valorant fell short of its 2025 performance.

This overview explores the main viewership trends, standout moments, and early audience indicators from the opening phase of the Esports World Cup 2026.

Esports World Cup 2026: week 1 results

The matches in the first week of EWC 2026 accumulated 20.1 million Hours Watched, marking a 10% rise from the same period in EWC 2025. The primary contributor was the Dota 2 tournament, which accounted for just over 8 million Hours Watched. The broadcasts for Valorant and Apex Legends registered slightly lower numbers. The lineup of esports titles for the initial week remained mostly consistent with the previous year.

EWC 2026 Week 1

Apex Legends captured attention during the first week with its intense final moments. The Japanese team UNLIMIT entered the competition as underdogs, barely making it to the final stage after finishing in the top ten only once in the first six matches. Surprisingly, they went on to win three out of the remaining four rounds.

The broadcast of the 10th and final map attracted over 440,000 Peak Viewers, surpassing EWC 2025 by 74% and outperforming the ALGS: 2026 Championship by 20,000 live viewers. The growth in viewership was fueled by a higher number of unique channels streaming the event. While about 200 channels covered the ALGS 2025 Midseason Playoffs, this number increased to over 300 for the ALGS 2026 Split 1 Playoffs.

UNLIMIT’s impressive performance in the finals led to a significant spike in viewership from Japan, making Japanese the top language for the tournament in terms of hours watched and peak concurrent viewers.

The viewership data incorporates statistics from the Wildcard Stage matches at the MLBB Mid Season Cup 2026, held before Week 1.

While Apex Legends saw a surge in viewership, the Valorant tournament experienced a decline compared to expectations. Peak viewership reached 246,000 during the final match where 100 Thieves defeated NRG, dropping by 45.6% from the previous year’s event. The early exits of popular teams contributed to this decrease. Paper Rex, Karmine Corp, and Rex Regum Qeon failed to qualify for the playoffs, while Gentle Mates and Team Heretics were eliminated in the first round.

Despite being broadcast on more unique channels than last year, the Valorant tournament saw diminished viewership. The decline was particularly noticeable on the official Esports World Cup YouTube channel, where peak viewership on the final day was three times lower than the 2025 event.

Some of the tournament’s prominent community casters also attracted smaller audiences. Former Dota 2 pro Alexey “Solo” Berezin led all individual channels in Hours Watched during the first week. He focused on matches involving Team Spirit, Team Yandex, and other Eastern European teams. French creator Lucas “Squeezie” Hauchard achieved the highest peak viewership among community casters, attracting over 70,900 concurrent viewers when his team, Gentle Mates, faced NRG in the Valorant quarterfinals. American streamer Jack “NiceWigg” Martin stood out for covering both the Apex Legends matches and the Valorant finals at this EWC.
