FaZe kicked off their Roman Imperium Cup IX journey with a 2-1 victory over Sangal in the upper bracket quarter-finals. The match nearly saw an upset, with late-round heroics from Russell “Twistzz” Van Dulken and Jakub “jcobbb” Pietruszewski on Cache sealing the deal for the top-seeded FaZe team.
The paths taken by the two teams to reach this point were starkly different. FaZe entered the playoffs as the number one seed, making this their first match of the tournament. Meanwhile, Sangal had to battle through the group stage and a play-in match to secure their spot in the bracket.
Sangal Claims Overtime Victory on Dust2
FaZe selected Dust2 as the starting map and took an early 3-0 lead. However, Sangal fought back and ended the first half with a 7-5 advantage on the CT side. The map went into overtime as neither team could close it out in regulation. Sangal emerged victorious with a 16-13 scoreline, securing FaZe’s map pick and going 1-0 up in the series.
Sangal’s choice of Nuke was swiftly countered by FaZe, who dominated the first half with an 8-4 lead on the defensive side. Twistzz’s leadership on the T-side helped FaZe maintain control and secure a 13-7 victory on Nuke, levelling the series at 1-1 as each team lost their respective map picks.
Twistzz and jcobbb Shine in Cache Decider
The final map on Cache mirrored the start of Nuke, with FaZe holding an 8-4 lead after the CT half. Sangal fought back to tie the score at 8-8, setting the stage for a tense decider with upper bracket elimination on the line. Twistzz’s impactful Tec-9 play turned the tide with a crucial four-kill round, while jcobbb’s 1v2 clutch sealed the deal for FaZe at 11-8. With this momentum, FaZe closed out the map and the series.
The victory keeps FaZe on the upper side of the bracket at Roman Imperium Cup IX, although it was a more challenging start than expected for the top seed. Despite the defeat, Sangal put up a valiant fight, pushing FaZe to the edge in both overtime and the deciding map. They certainly made the top seed work for their victory in this series.
