Dragon’s Dogma 2 was praised for its open-world action RPG elements that showcased the series’ unique flavor, but also faced criticism at launch for inheriting some flaws from its predecessor. Despite fan demand for improvements and expansions, little action had been taken.
Now, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is undergoing a significant transformation with the Dark Arisen expansion. Set in the far-northern region of Norgan, separate from the base game’s continent of Vermund, it introduces a new story, monsters, vocation skills, and more challenging combat. The development team is also revamping the game’s overall entertainment value with new systems.
The commitment to these changes and improvements was demonstrated through patches to the base game released prior to the expansion’s launch. These patches addressed long-standing fan requests for performance optimizations and quality-of-life additions.
The anticipation for the Dark Arisen expansion is now higher than ever. At Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, Germany, Capcom Director Kento Kinoshita and Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi shared insights on their direction and goals.

Q. What sets this DLC apart from the base game? What kind of experience do you aim to provide players?
Director Kinoshita: The main difference lies in the shift to a hack-and-slash gameplay cycle in a new area known as the “Relic Expedition Cycle.” Players explore Norgan, uncover mysterious relics through combat and exploration, and then return to base for appraisal. This cycle offers a unique and addictive experience compared to the base game.
Our goal is to deliver the thrill of discovering a brand-new region in Dragon’s Dogma, along with the enjoyment of this fresh gameplay cycle. The frigid environment of Norgan presents unique challenges and activities that enhance the overall experience.
Q. Is there a thematic connection between the heartless dragon in this expansion and the Arisen losing their heart in the base game?
Director Kinoshita: Indeed, there is a deliberate connection. The theme explores the relationship between the heartless dragon and the Arisen who have lost their hearts, adding depth to the story of the DLC.

Q. How large is the new region of Norgan, and what motivates players to explore it?
Director Kinoshita: The new map size is approximately one-quarter of the base game’s Vermund, expanding the world by about 25%.
The specific reasons for players to discover Norgan and embark on its quests are best experienced firsthand when the DLC launches. However, players can initiate the Norgan questline early in the game, even without completing the main story. The journey to Norgan begins with a quest from Brant at the tavern in Vernworth Castle, offering a seamless transition to the new region.
While there is no level requirement, it is recommended for players to be around Level 40 due to the increased difficulty. The decision to venture into Norgan is left to the player’s discretion.
Q. What inspired the introduction of the Relic Expedition Cycle and the appraisal system? How diverse are the random stats obtained through appraisal?
Director Kinoshita: The appraisal and relic systems were designed to enhance the challenge posed by stronger enemies in Norgan. By rewarding players with unidentified relics that can be appraised for unique skills and abilities, we aim to provide a more engaging and satisfying experience compared to traditional leveling up.
The randomness in stats extends beyond attack and defense power, encompassing unique skills and special abilities. This diversity results in a vast array of possible combinations, ensuring surprises with each appraisal.

Q. What can players expect from the newly added Hard Mode? Does it offer more than just increased enemy stats?
Director Kinoshita: Hard Mode goes beyond stat boosts by altering enemy placement, AI behavior, and thinking patterns. This ensures a challenging experience from start to finish, appealing to players seeking a more thrilling gameplay experience.
Strategic thinking and resource management are essential to succeed in Hard Mode, offering an intriguing challenge for those who found the base game too easy.
As the game becomes significantly more challenging, each potion and heal will become truly valuable. Every decision, such as when to use a potion, will feel engaging and important.
Before selecting Hard Mode in Dragon’s Dogma 2, please be aware that this setting cannot be reversed, so choose wisely.

Q. Korean gamers are eager for this release. Do you have any final words for Korean players?
Director Kinoshita: Greetings to all players in Korea. We have noticed the enthusiastic feedback online, which has inspired our team to strive for excellence. The upcoming expansion has been crafted with great dedication, and we are confident that players in Korea and worldwide will thoroughly enjoy their experience with Dragon’s Dogma.
In addition to the DLC, Nintendo Switch 2 support will be introduced as a new platform. For those who own a Switch 2 and have not yet delved into Dragon’s Dogma 2, we recommend giving it a try. Pre-ordering the game allows immediate access to the base game of Dragon’s Dogma 2, without needing to wait for the DLC release.
To players on PlayStation 5, Xbox, or PC who have yet to experience Dragon’s Dogma 2, we suggest starting with the base game. We eagerly anticipate your feedback on Dark Arisen come October.
