Level-5’s CEO, Akihiro Hino, has issued an apology for the use of generative AI in the studio’s recent digital presentation.

According to a report by VGC, Hino acknowledged that AI was utilized in showcasing reveals for Professor Layton and Yo-Kai Watch titles, following observations made by viewers who suspected AI-generated content.

In response to the criticism on X/Twitter, Hino explained that AI was employed to enhance the presentation’s visual appeal as an experimental measure. He expressed regret for causing discomfort to fans and clarified that the games themselves are not created by AI, emphasizing that Level-5’s titles retain their unique charm and creativity through human involvement.

Hino also highlighted the studio’s strategic use of AI for efficiency purposes, such as streamlining artwork processes, rather than for generating original content from scratch. This decision aligns with Level-5’s objective of reducing development time for major releases from five years to two.

Recent reports have indicated that a majority of European game developers are apprehensive about the potential pressure of generative AI to increase productivity, although fewer believe that AI will directly impact their job security or demand in the industry.
