Mark Cerny, the Lead System Architect at PlayStation for the past two console generations, has officially confirmed to Digital Foundry that Sony collaborated with AMD to develop the technology behind FSR Redstone Frame Generation as part of the Project Amethyst. An equivalent library is expected to be available on PlayStation platforms in the future. However, Cerny mentioned that there are no plans for releases this year, suggesting that frame generation may not be accessible on PlayStation consoles until at least 2027.
Cerny also explained that PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution 2.0, which was recently launched on PlayStation 5 Pro systems, utilizes the same algorithm developed in collaboration with AMD that powers the FSR Redstone’s Upscaling feature.
Cerny clarified that the new PSSR uses the same co-developed algorithm as FSR Redstone’s Upscaling. FSR Frame Generation is also based on co-engineered technology. He expressed satisfaction with the progress of this work and hinted at the possibility of an equivalent frame generation library on PlayStation platforms in the future. Cerny concluded by stating that there are no further releases planned for this year and that he looks forward to discussing this further in the future.
It is worth noting that a few games have already implemented AMD FSR 3 Frame Generation on PlayStation 5, such as Immortals of Aveum by Ascendant Studios and The First Descendant by NEXON. The upcoming official version is expected to offer significant improvements, including reduced artifacts and ghosting, thanks to machine-learning-based enhancements introduced with FSR Redstone.
