G2 Esports has introduced the G2 Performance Lab, a platform for research and innovation supported by Red Bull. The organization aims to incorporate scientific methods into its competitive teams and generate insights for the broader esports industry.

Based in Berlin, G2 Esports revealed that the lab will concentrate on enhancing performance, athlete well-being, coaching, training strategies, and support systems for G2’s top-tier teams. The project is overseen by Ismael Pedraza-Ramirez, G2’s Performance Lab Director and performance coach, and will involve collaborations with academic partners from institutions such as the German Sport University Cologne and Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

This launch signifies a shift in the esports landscape, with leading organizations moving beyond just investing in rosters and sponsorships to focus on infrastructure that can enhance competitive results, support player longevity, and establish sustainable operational advantages. While performance departments covering areas like sleep, nutrition, psychology, recovery, and data analysis are common in traditional sports at the elite level, esports is still catching up in implementing such systems despite increasing research on the cognitive, psychological, and health challenges faced by professional players.

Pedraza-Ramirez is actively involved in this emerging academic field, contributing to research on esports psychology, coaching, and mental health in competitive gaming. A paper from 2024 co-authored by Pedraza-Ramirez highlighted the health challenges faced by competitive gamers and emphasized the need for more initiatives and research in this area.

The first project of the lab, “A Space for Leaders,” is focused on leadership development among staff through research and collaborative learning. G2 outlined this project as part of its coaching and coach development pillar, alongside training design and delivery, player development, and performance health and support systems.

The announcement did not disclose the financial terms of Red Bull’s support or the duration of the partnership, nor did it specify the timeline for the release of the first research findings, except to say that publications are expected soon.

Red Bull’s involvement is significant strategically, as the company has a strong focus on athlete performance rather than just brand visibility through sponsorships. Red Bull’s Athlete Performance Center is known as a “global performance accelerator” for professional athletes and teams, with its esports initiatives encompassing competitive events, team partnerships, and player-focused performance content.

G2 and Red Bull have an established commercial relationship, with Red Bull being listed as one of G2’s partners on the organization’s website. This partnership builds on a multi-year agreement announced in 2019, expanding their collaboration beyond Red Bull Racing.

G2 CEO Alban Dechelotte expressed gratitude for Red Bull’s support, noting the company’s track record in investing in athlete performance and high-performance environments. He highlighted the shared ambition between the two organizations to create a significant impact by pushing boundaries and setting new standards.

For G2, the Performance Lab adds another dimension to its identity as both an esports team operator and entertainment brand. The organization’s expansion into competitive titles and sports-entertainment formats, including the Kings League through G2 Football Club, demonstrates its commitment to growth and innovation in the industry.

Pedraza-Ramirez emphasized that the lab aims to fill a knowledge gap in elite esports development, intending to revolutionize performance improvement not only at G2 but also in the broader esports realm. He highlighted the need to better understand how to develop elite esports competitors into world-class athletes, with the support of Red Bull.
