Leagues ApS, the organizer of esports tournaments that managed the UK and Nordics Northern League of Legends Championship (NLC), has confirmed to The Esports Advocate that it is ceasing its operations.
The Danish company, known for its esports platform Leagues.gg and media arm Leagues Media, has informed Riot Games that it is no longer able to oversee the NLC.
Ramish Hussain, Head of Live Production at Leagues Media, shared on Linkedin that due to the company’s closure, his time at Leagues Media has come to an end.
A reliable source has confirmed today that all employees have been let go as a result of the company’s shutdown.
Although still active on Denmark’s Central Business Register, the company’s status is anticipated to change imminently.
This development follows some staff layoffs last year when Leagues ApS decided to centralize its business operations in Copenhagen. Earlier this year, NLC broadcast talent raised concerns on social media regarding delayed payments, outstanding invoices, and being removed from their positions, resulting in a lack of match commentators for NLC streams.
Following Leagues ApS’ notification to Riot Games about its inability to manage the NLC, Riot has been engaging in discussions with potential new partners.
Riot recently announced on X the postponement of the NLC spring split to late April to allow sufficient time for finalizing the league’s structure.
“We are aware that this may disrupt your ability to follow and support your favorite teams, and we are working diligently to address this issue,” Riot stated.
“We are actively evaluating both short-term and long-term strategies for the region’s structure and stability to ensure that teams in the UK, Ireland, and the Nordics have a dependable competitive environment. Various format options are being explored to determine the most suitable way forward.
“We will provide a comprehensive update as soon as the new tournament organizer, format, and dates are finalized.”
