Compulsion Games has successfully completed a management buyout, becoming independent from Xbox. The studio, along with its staff, is now under new ownership.

CEO Guillaume Provost emphasized that the team’s unity was the top priority in this decision. He stated, “I did this deal for the team first and foremost. The team expressed a strong desire to stay together, emphasizing their solidarity.”

Although the current staff count remains undisclosed, there were reports of some employees departing following concerns about a potential closure. This came after Xbox’s announcement of staff layoffs, leading to the spin-out of the studio.

Provost acknowledged the challenges faced but remained optimistic about the future. He noted, “In the face of adversity, opportunities for growth and change emerge. Tough times lay the foundation for resilient companies that understand the importance of efficiency and adaptability.”

The studio is enthusiastic about reclaiming ownership of its intellectual properties, which include titles like Contrast, We Happy Few, and South of Midnight.

Provost clarified that the publishing rights are also reverting to Compulsion, with a transition period in place for different platform holders. Supporting the studio through game purchases aids in this transition.

Seeking stability and long-term funding, Provost is exploring various options to ensure the studio’s sustainability. Collaboration with other developers and IP holders is being considered to foster growth and success.

Emphasizing the importance of team alignment and profitability, Provost expressed confidence in the studio’s ability to thrive in the future. Taking a deliberate and cautious approach, he aims to set the team up for success in the long run.
