A recent analysis by Sensor Tower reveals the significant lead that GTA 6 has in terms of preorders compared to some of the biggest AAA games released in the past six years.
Looking at preorder data for popular titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022), Diablo 4 (2023), Hogwarts Legacy (2023), and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (2023), Sensor Tower compared them to the preorder trend for GTA 6.
Modern Warfare 2 was a standout success, with preorder numbers surpassing Diablo 4 by over double at 45 days before launch. The game also achieved the biggest opening weekend for Call of Duty, generating $800 million in revenue. (Black Ops 6 later broke this record in 2024, being the first CoD title to launch on Game Pass simultaneously).
Currently, GTA 6 is leading by 148% in terms of preorder numbers compared to Modern Warfare 2 at this point before launch.
It’s important to note that this analysis focuses solely on digital preorders in the United States and does not include physical releases.
As of October 13, Sensor Tower estimates that GTA 6 has accumulated 6.08 million preorders, translating to an estimated revenue of $594 million. The majority of preorders (74%) are for PlayStation, with the remaining 26% for Xbox. Most preorders are for the $100 ultimate edition of GTA 6.
GTA 6 is poised to make history as the biggest launch in the gaming industry. Industry analysts predicted sales ranging from 30 million to over 50 million units in the game’s first year, according to GamesIndustry.biz.
