Cloud9 faced defeat in the Worlds 2026 Play-In against FURIA on Friday, losing 3-1 in their lower-bracket series and becoming the first team to exit the tournament. Support player Philippe “Vulcan” Laflamme did not hold back in his criticism of the team post-match, labeling Cloud9 as pathetic, as reported by Sheep Esports.
This loss marked the end of Cloud9’s journey in Worlds 2026 while giving FURIA a chance to continue after their initial 0-3 loss to MVK Esports. Despite Cloud9 securing the first game in the series, FURIA rallied back to claim victory in the following three games.
The Play-In stage offers little margin for error, as teams must earn their spot in the Swiss Stage through the Worlds 2026 Play-In format. Cloud9’s path has now been closed, while FURIA’s 3-1 triumph has granted them another opportunity.
FURIA’s Turnaround from an Early Lead to Elimination
Cloud9 briefly made history by winning Game 1 against FURIA in League of Legends esports. However, FURIA retaliated with three consecutive wins, extending their winning streak over Cloud9 following a 3-0 victory at the Americas Cup in March.
FURIA’s bot laner Andrey “Ayu” Saraiva was named the series MVP, boasting an impressive 18/6/19 KDA. Despite this individual feat, the series highlighted Cloud9’s inability to capitalize on their initial success.
Rivera Acknowledges Responsibility Post-Elimination
Cloud9’s head coach Christian “IWillDominate” Rivera took accountability for the team’s shortcomings, admitting that he failed to create a conducive environment for the squad to bounce back from their previous defeat. He emphasized the team’s lack of resilience as a significant gap between Cloud9 and stronger opponents.
Bot laner Edward “Tactical” Ra also expressed disappointment, labeling the series as a disappointing conclusion to Cloud9’s Worlds campaign. The candid remarks from both Ra and Vulcan painted a clear picture of the team’s failure to meet expectations.
FURIA’s Path to Swiss Stage Qualification
FURIA was slated to face MVK Esports once again, with a chance to secure a spot in the Swiss Stage. The victor would then face Karmine Corp for the qualification spot, while the loser would face elimination from the tournament.
