Introduced by Jack Huynh, the Senior Vice President and General Manager of AMD’s Computing and Graphics Group, the FSR Diamond marks a significant leap in graphics and rendering technologies.

The FSR Diamond is poised to drive upcoming games that heavily emphasize ray tracing and path tracing, showcasing AMD’s commitment to innovative graphics solutions.

At the recent Project Amethyst reveal, AMD disclosed that the next-gen PlayStation hardware will feature Radiance Cores for ray tracing, Neural Arrays for machine learning tasks, and Universal Compression for optimized bandwidth consumption.

Given the shared AMD GPU architecture between the upcoming PlayStation and Xbox consoles, Xbox will also harness these cutting-edge technologies.

Both consoles will run on FSR Diamond, utilizing their hardware-based machine learning capabilities to deliver upscaling, multi-frame generation, ray regeneration, and neural rendering. Notably, PlayStation’s variant of FSR will be known as PSSR, denoting PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution.

Many users speculate whether AMD will maintain exclusivity for FSR Diamond on RDNA 5, the next-gen Radeon GPU architecture. Leaks suggest this exclusivity is likely, as FSR Diamond’s AI/ML-accelerated features are optimized for RDNA5.

A reputable leaker, identified as @Kepler_L2 on X, asserts that FSR Diamond will be limited to RDNA5. According to the leak, this exclusivity is crucial for leveraging AI/ML-accelerated features inherent in the new architecture:

“They need to use new AI/ML accel features of RDNA5 to achieve a meaningful improvement in performance and quality, and that makes porting to older architectures hard.”

Anticipated Launch

The next-gen consoles are slated for a 2027 release. In the AMD Q4 2025 earnings report, CEO Lisa Su confirmed progress in developing AMD-powered Steam Machines and next-gen Xbox consoles, hinting at a 2027 launch:

“Valve is on track to begin shipping its AMD-powered Steam Machine early this year, and development of Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox featuring an AMD semi-custom SoC is progressing well to support a launch in 2027.”

With FSR Diamond set to debut alongside the upcoming Xbox, AMD is expected to roll out this technology in conjunction with the 2027 releases of the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation, barring any delays beyond that year.
