Upon entering the office of CEO Choi Moon-young at FirstSpark Games, my attention was immediately drawn to four clocks displaying major global time zones. CEO Choi explained that with “Throne & Liberty (TL)” being a global service, it was crucial to easily check the time in each region.
These clocks held deeper significance than mere decoration. Symbolizing the current state of FirstSpark Games, which emerged as an independent entity from NCSOFT in February 2025 with the live IP “Throne & Liberty.”
Previously an employee of NCSOFT and the leader of the Throne & Liberty camp, CEO Choi Moon-young now heads an organization comprising around 250 members. For him, independence represents both the challenge of establishing a unique identity beyond the shadow of NCSOFT and the responsibility of proving their value in the global market.
Meeting CEO Choi Moon-young nine months post-launch, it was evident that he was gearing up for a new chapter akin to the ‘first spark,’ discussing the present and future of the independent studio, along with their innovative vision transcending ‘NC’s DNA.’

Reflecting on the transition to an independent corporation, could you share candidly about the anticipated benefits and potential challenges compared to the camp days?
“Establishing new internal rules and culture as a separate company presented its challenges. Shifting mindsets proved challenging, given the ingrained NC values and work processes. The transition from a larger entity like NC to a smaller independent studio required adjusting to direct decision-making and execution, which was unfamiliar territory for most team members.
Gradual changes are underway, focusing on tasks beyond the reach of headquarters’ constraints. Convincing and leading internal stakeholders to adopt new approaches has been met with some resistance, necessitating a shift in entrenched perspectives and work styles.
Could you provide an example?
“When our game reaches a certain development stage suitable for external exposure, I advocate for external testing and subsequent processes. However, headquarters exercises caution due to brand protection concerns. Consequently, we are navigating these differences and advocating for autonomy in decision-making. Overcoming internal hesitations and stereotypes is an ongoing process of persuasion.
Looking back to when you were appointed CEO pre-split, what were your thoughts and emotions at that pivotal moment?
“Assuming the role of CEO presented a significant opportunity, as I have long believed in the necessity of an autonomous development structure within the organization. However, the weight of being the inaugural attempt and setting a precedent added a layer of responsibility to showcase positive outcomes. This pressure served as a driving force, propelling the team to operate with greater agility and speed.
Reflecting on recent months, what stands out as the most significant emotional change you’ve experienced?
“Currently, as a subsidiary of NC, financial stability is assured. Yet, operating at a profit remains essential for sustained viability. Managing financial aspects prudently while aspiring for complete independence poses a delicate balance. The sense of impending autonomy and the desire to establish a sustainable, long-term company add a layer of complexity to my role.
If the current phase is akin to ‘babysitting,’ the company must evolve to embody a distinct, independent identity. This evolution necessitates meticulous, systematic management to prepare for the future.
Named “FirstSpark,” symbolizing the ‘first spark.’ Can you elaborate on the significance of the company name?
“The choice of color was the initial decision. Opting for a vibrant, youthful color to signify independence from NC while maintaining a subtle connection. Initially considering the name ‘Orange Games,’ internal feedback steered towards a more memorable, sophisticated direction. The final name, ‘FirstSpark,’ embodies the notion of igniting growth from a small beginning.
While internal deliberations initially revolved around varied names, the eventual choice encapsulated the essence of igniting potential from modest origins.
Entrepreneurs emphasize the importance of a company name that resonates. What factors guided your decision-making process?
“Prioritizing substance over superficial appeal, the chosen name holds intrinsic value. Contrary to surface-level aesthetics, the name’s essence reflects the company’s core values and aspirations.
