Despite generating record revenues exceeding $6 billion, Epic Games has decided to increase the price of V-Bucks. This decision has caused quite a stir within the gaming community.
Fortnite stands out as one of the most financially successful video games in history. While six of its seven game modes are free to play, Epic Games rakes in billions annually through its in-game store.
According to Statista, Fortnite could potentially surpass the $6 billion mark by 2025. The sales outlook for the current year also appears promising.
Despite the significant revenue, Epic Games is citing increased operational costs as the reason behind the V-Bucks price hike. This move has not been well-received by the gaming community.
As a result, Epic Games will be implementing new prices for V-Bucks in Fortnite’s in-game store starting March 19. While the package prices will remain unchanged, players will receive fewer V-Bucks for the same amount of money due to a phenomenon known as shrinkflation.
Epic Games justifies this adjustment by stating that the price increase is necessary to cover rising costs
.
The revised price packages are as follows:
- The $8.99 package will now include 800 V-Bucks instead of the previous 1,000 V-Bucks.
- The $22.99 package will now include 2,400 V-Bucks instead of the previous 2,800 V-Bucks.
- The $36.99 package will now include 4,500 V-Bucks instead of the previous 5,000 V-Bucks.
- The $89.99 package will now include 12,500 V-Bucks instead of the previous 13,500 V-Bucks.
Players can still redeem physically purchased gift cards for V-Bucks at the old exchange rate after March 19. To address the community’s concerns about the price increase, Epic Games has announced that buyers of the new packages will receive 20% cashback in the form of Epic rewards, which can be used in Fortnite or the Epic Games Store.
In addition, Epic Games plans to reduce the cost of battle passes in Fortnite. Instead of costing 1,000 V-Bucks, they will soon be priced at V-Bucks. However, due to the increase in the virtual currency’s price, players will not see any real benefit from this change.
What led to these changes?
On March 10, Epic Games announced in a blog post that new prices for V-Bucks would come into effect on March 19. The rationale behind these changes was attributed to the escalating operational expenses associated with Fortnite.
How are players responding to these adjustments?
The Fortnite community has expressed dissatisfaction with the impending price alterations. Many players feel that they will be receiving less in-game currency for their money. This sentiment has been echoed across platforms like Reddit, where users have been vocal about their frustration.
It’s not just the price modifications that are irking players. Recent issues such as matchmaking problems, bugs, and unpopular decisions by the developers have already strained the community’s patience. For some players, the new pricing changes are seen as the final straw, with concerns that Epic Games is not investing enough back into the game.
One user on Reddit, FiRe_GeNDo, expressed:
The adjustments to V-Bucks are disappointing. Despite their record profits, Epic Games is reducing the V-Bucks we can earn, allowing their profits to soar even higher. It’s evident that they are prioritizing more skins over gameplay innovations, leading to ongoing matchmaking issues and a lack of exciting game elements.
Another user, zdogg12, shared:
I’ve tolerated all the negative changes, but this is the last straw. From the poor user interface to adjustments in emotes and pricing, I’ve stuck with it. However, the recent price hike is unacceptable.
Both my girlfriend and I have canceled our Crew subscriptions. I have no intention of purchasing the new Battle Pass or other passes. I believe many others share our sentiments at this time.
This could potentially mark the downfall of Fortnite… I anticipate significant losses for the game, especially given the unresolved bugs and lack of engaging gameplay content, as the focus shifts towards collaborations.
The reasons behind the increased Fortnite prices may stem from declining economic performance and overall price escalation. However, they are likely not the sole contributing factors.
Reports suggest that Epic Games’ in-house game store has been struggling to generate substantial profits for a while. The strategy of offering free games to attract wealthy customers has not yielded the desired results. Consequently, Fortnite has had to offset the store’s losses, potentially leading to the recent price adjustments.
