Recent LLVM updates reveal additional RDNA 4m variants alongside GFX1170, showcasing similar instruction capabilities.

AMD Expands Next-Gen iGPU Roadmap with New RDNA 4m Graphics Targets, GFX1171 and GFX1172

Prior compiler patches indicated that RDNA 4m integrates various RDNA 4-style instruction-set enhancements, including support for FP8 and BF8 data formats, as well as WMMA matrix instructions for AI workloads. Now, AMD is broadening its next-gen integrated GPU lineup with two additional RDNA 4m graphics targets. These are the GFX1171 and GFX1172.

These new targets complement the previously discovered GFX1170, confirming AMD’s preparation of multiple variants within the same architecture. As reported by Phoronix, the latest graphics targets emerged in the LLVM changes within AMD’s open-source graphics stack. Both GFX1171 and GFX1172 fall under the RDNA 4m label and share equivalent instruction-set capabilities.

The RDNA 4m designation is intriguing as it deviates from RDNA 4 entirely. RDNA 4 is exclusively reserved for the discrete GPU series and will not be present in upcoming AMD SoCs. RDNA 4m belongs to the GFX11 family, linked with the RDNA 3 architecture. Linux documentation also identifies the initial GFX1170 target as an APU or SoC-class GPU rather than a discrete Radeon GPU.

Therefore, current indications suggest that the GFX1170 family will be utilized in the Zen 6-based Medusa Point APUs. Thus, RDNA 4m acts as a transitional phase between RDNA 3.5 and RDNA 4 architecture. It’s important to note that Medusa Point will follow the Zen 5-based Strix Point chips, featuring RDNA 3.5-based iGPUs, with a significant GPU architecture shift expected only with the Medusa Halo chips. Medusa Halo is anticipated to showcase AMD RDNA 5 graphics, introducing a true generational leap in the mobile platform and supporting next-gen LPDDR6 memory.
