Battlefield 6: I played Season 2 and it was great – but I’m still more worried about the shooter than ever before.

Battlefield 6 is starting its second season, and I’ve had the opportunity to try out the first new map. It’s promising, but the overall state of the game still concerns me.

The second season of Battlefield 6 is set to begin on February 17, 2026, after a delay from the originally planned January release. I’ve spent a couple of hours testing the new map and I’m eagerly anticipating the full release. However, despite the quality improvement, Season 2 feels lacking in content.

How is the new map?

My initial impressions of the new map, Contaminated, are positive. The map offers a good balance for different playstyles and classes, with various capture points that cater to infantry, tanks, and aircraft.

Contaminated provides a diverse gameplay experience, with areas for intense infantry combat as well as opportunities for vehicle tactics. The map size is adequate for strategic gameplay, though it may not satisfy jet pilots due to its smaller scale.

Much ado about nothing?

A new gameplay mechanic introduced in Season 2 involves gas clouds covering parts of the map, affecting visibility and gameplay dynamics. While the gas adds a unique challenge, it feels more like a temporary gimmick than a substantial gameplay addition.

Battlefield 6 will be kept alive

Despite the positive aspects of the new map and gameplay changes, the lack of substantial content additions in Season 2 is a concern. With only two maps and limited new weapons and vehicles, the season may not offer enough variety to keep players engaged in the long term.

What’s in Season 2

2 maps

  • Contamination: A large map featuring tanks and helicopters, set in the Bavarian Alps military base.
  • Hagental Base: An infantry-only map located in a large bunker with dark corridors.

5 weapons + 1 melee weapon

February 17:

  • GRT-CPS (DMR): Semi-automatic long-range rifle.
  • VCR-2 (Assault Rifle): Fully automatic rifle suitable for close combat.
  • M121 A2 (Light Machine Gun): High damage weapon with a low rate of fire.

March 17:

  • CZA31 (submachine gun): High rate of fire SMG.
  • VZ. 61 (side arm): Fully automatic side arm.

April 14:

  • Ripper Machete (melee weapon): Bladed melee weapon.

3 Vehicles

  • AH-6 Little Bird (February 17): Light combat helicopter.
  • M1030-1 (March 17): Fast motorcycle.
  • LTV (April 14): Reconnaissance vehicle.

2 Gadgets

February 17:

  • 9K38 Igla: Anti-aircraft missile launcher.
  • HTI-MK2: Gadget jammer.

Various limited-time game modes/events

  • VL7 Strike (starting February 17): Game mode with poison gas clouds.

Protect Yourself

It is crucial to have gas masks with you to protect yourself from hallucinations. Without a mask, you will start to experience hallucinations.

Nightfall (starting March 17)

During the new Hagental Base map in multiplayer and Gauntlet, darkness will envelop the area. All players will be equipped with night vision goggles, flashlights, or thermal imaging sights to navigate the darkness.

Operation Augur (starting April 14)

Operation Augur is a mode inspired by Battlefield 1 operations. Attackers must capture all sections of Contamination before advancing to the Hagental Base map, while defenders aim to hold off the attackers for as long as possible. The mode is reminiscent of a larger version of Breakthrough.

Season 2 has raised concerns and disappointment within the community. Despite initial promises and three studios working on Battlefield, the implementation of the season model has fallen short.

Comparisons to Battlefield 3 and 4 may not always hold up, but fans fondly recall the days when entire map packs were released at once.

The lack of maps is not the only issue. Battlefield 6 faces challenges with community servers, netcode, audio, weapon and vehicle balance, menus, map design, and overall progress.

An update on February 17 aims to address some of these issues, including audio problems, weapon balance, and Battle Pass leveling. The success of these solutions remains to be seen. Battlefield 6 is running out of time, and fans are becoming impatient.

Editor’s Take

Despite its flaws, Battlefield 6 remains a compelling shooter. However, the competitive landscape of multiplayer shooters offers alternatives for players. Dice must focus on delivering new maps to maintain player engagement and interest.

The future of Battlefield 6 hinges on the continuous release of quality content. While Season 2 may not have met expectations, there is still hope for improvement in Season 3.
