Controversy Over AI Skins: Battlefield 6 Is Making Things Unnecessarily Difficult for Itself with Season 5

The latest season of Battlefield 6 has kicked off, but instead of focusing on the new maps and weapons, social media is buzzing about AI skins and balance updates. This is quite disappointing.

I must admit, I was excited about Season 5 of Battlefield 6 when I first tried it out. Two major All-Out-Warfare maps available from the start, a variety of new weapons, and the promise of a server browser coming in December. I had high hopes that this would be a great content update for fans. However, it seems like DICE is facing some backlash once again.

The Familiar Narrative

A quick look at X or Reddit reveals that most of the discussions surrounding the new season revolve around one common issue: poor quality skins.

Fans are accusing the developers of relying on AI assistance> for creating the new soldier skins in the Battle Pass and then neglecting to properly vet the outcomes. They believe they have found examples of this in several skins:

This isn’t the first time that the skins in Battlefield 6 have stirred up controversy. In previous seasons, there were similar complaints about overly extravagant skins; in some cases, DICE even had to backtrack and change soldier uniforms due to the uproar.

So why do they continue to repeat the same missteps? While I understand that DICE likely creates skins based on what sells best, they shouldn’t have made such bold promises before release—or at the very least, they should have offered players the option to disable unrealistic skins afterward. This entire situation could have been avoided.

I’ve Had Enough

It would be easier for me to overlook all of this if Battlefield 6 was simply a bad game. However, despite some flaws, I genuinely enjoy the shooter, and I believe it has improved over time. Season 5 introduces the Vegas Strip map, which has quickly become one of my favorites. Releasing two new maps right at the beginning of the season was a smart move.

It’s truly unfortunate that most of the online chatter is focused on subpar skins and potentially controversial balance adjustments. The blame for this situation rests squarely on DICE: The developers should have anticipated the backlash from such skins. They should also realize by now that making sudden balance changes can lead to confusion (for instance, reducing the duration of a laser marker from 9 to 2 seconds).

However, it’s also disheartening to see a toxic discussion culture develop around Battlefield 6. The history of Battlefield 2042 and past missteps with Battlefield 6 likely contribute to this. Genuine criticism of skins should not be disregarded either.

Despite everything, I can’t help but wonder: Are we missing the mark if, during the launch of a new season, the focus is primarily on lackluster skins, with little attention given to the new maps and weapons? Is the conversation truly about the game, or is it just about finding something to rally against as a community?

As a fan of Battlefield and Bethesda, I understand the frustration when beloved franchises undergo changes that we may not agree with. However, dwelling solely on the negatives could lead to a pessimistic mindset that strips away all enjoyment and hope. That’s why, for now, I choose to immerse myself in a round of Battlefield and simply have fun.
